How To Cancel A Subscription On Google Play

To cancel a subscription on Google Play: 1. Open the Google Play Store app on your Android device and tap your profile icon in the top right. 2. Tap Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. 3. Select the subscription you want to end. 4. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts. No Android handy? The same list lives on the web at play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions — sign in, pick the subscription, and cancel there. Either way, you keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for.

The One Mistake Everyone Makes

Google says it plainly in its own help docs: uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. Delete the app and the charges keep coming every renewal date. The subscription lives in your Google account, not on your phone, so the only way out is the cancellation flow above. If a mystery charge keeps appearing, this is almost always why.

Cancel From The Web (Any Device)

  1. Go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions in any browser.
  2. Sign in with the Google account that holds the subscription. If nothing is listed, you are probably in the wrong account — check any other Gmail addresses you use.
  3. Find the subscription and click Manage → Cancel subscription.
  4. Follow the confirmation steps until you see the cancellation confirmed — back out early and the subscription stays active.

What Happens After You Cancel

  • You keep access for the time you already paid. Cancel an annual plan in July and you can use it until the year is up — you just will not be billed again.
  • No automatic refund. Canceling stops future charges; it does not give money back for the current period.
  • Prepaid plans need no cancellation. If you bought a fixed-length prepaid plan, it simply expires on its own.
  • Payment plans are stickier. If you committed to a subscription paid in installments, stopping renewal does not erase the remaining installments on the current term — you still owe those.

Want A Refund Too?

Refunds are separate from cancellation and follow Google Play's refund policy. In practice: recent accidental charges are worth requesting directly from Google through the Play Store's order history, while older charges usually need to go through the app's developer, who handles refunds under their own policy. Neither is guaranteed, but a polite request close to the charge date succeeds surprisingly often. Cancel first either way, so the clock stops.

Pause Instead Of Cancel

Some apps let you pause a subscription instead of killing it — useful for a streaming service you only want during one show's season. Open the subscription in the same Subscriptions list and look for Manage → Pause payments. Pauses kick in at the end of the current billing period and, depending on the app, can run from one week to three months. If you do not see the option, that developer has not enabled it — and annual plans cannot be paused at all.

Common Problems

The subscription is not in my list

Three usual suspects: you are signed in to the wrong Google account; the subscription is actually billed elsewhere (directly by the service, through the App Store, through Amazon, or through your TV); or it was a prepaid plan that already expired. If you pay for something on your phone bill or credit card and it is not in Google Play, work through our hub guide to finding every subscription you are paying for to track down who actually bills you.

I canceled but got charged anyway

Check the confirmation email — if you never got one, the cancellation did not complete. Also verify the renewal date: charges put through before you canceled stand, since cancellation only blocks future renewals. If both check out and you were still charged, use the refund request path above.

The app was removed from Google Play

If a developer pulls their app from the store, Google cancels your future renewals automatically. Past charges generally are not refunded except as the refund policy allows.

Subscribed Somewhere Else?

Billing follows the store where you signed up, and every store hides the cancel button somewhere different. We have matching walkthroughs for iPhone and the App Store, Amazon, and Roku — the rule of thumb is always the same: cancel with whoever charges your card, not inside the app you are trying to leave.

FAQ

Does canceling take effect immediately?

The cancellation is immediate, but your access continues until the end of the paid period. You lose nothing by canceling early — in fact it is the safest way to avoid a surprise renewal.

Can I restart a canceled subscription?

Yes. As long as the app still offers it, open the subscription under Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions (canceled ones stay listed for a while) and choose the resubscribe option.

Will I get a reminder before renewal?

Google emails a receipt after each charge, but do not count on a warning beforehand for monthly plans. If you only need one month of something, cancel right after subscribing and ride out the paid period.
