Acorn TV Not Working? How To Fix It
If Acorn TV is not working, the fastest fix is the classic one: close the Acorn TV app completely, power your streaming device off for a full minute, and restart it. That clears the majority of freezing, black-screen, and playback failures. If that does not do it: 1. Check your internet connection by playing a video in another app. 2. Sign out of Acorn TV and sign back in. 3. Uninstall and reinstall the Acorn TV app, which forces the latest version and clears corrupted data. Below are the device-specific steps and the fixes for the most common specific errors.
First, Rule Out The Basics
- Is it just one show or everything? If a single episode fails but others play, the problem is on Acorn's end — report it via support.acorn.tv and try again later.
- Is your subscription active? Sign in at acorn.tv in a browser. If you can watch there, your account is fine and the problem is the device. If you cannot sign in at all, your subscription may have lapsed — Acorn TV currently runs $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year.
- Where did you subscribe? Acorn sells subscriptions directly, through Apple, through Amazon, and as a separate channel inside The Roku Channel. Those logins are not interchangeable — signing in to the standalone app with Roku Channel credentials (or vice versa) fails every time. More on that below.
Buffering Or Constant Stuttering
Acorn's own support team recommends these steps, in order:
- Turn the streaming device off for at least one full minute, then power it back on.
- If possible, connect the device to your router with an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi.
- Disconnect other devices that are hogging bandwidth (downloads, video calls, other streams).
- Restart your modem and router.
British dramas are not exactly bandwidth monsters, so if other services buffer too, the problem is your connection, not Acorn.
Fixes By Device
Roku
- Press Home, highlight the Acorn TV channel, press the star (*) button, and choose Remove channel.
- Restart the Roku (Settings → System → Power → System restart).
- Reinstall Acorn TV from the Channel Store and sign in again.
- Watch for the two-listing trap: Roku carries both the standalone Acorn TV app and “Acorn TV on The Roku Channel.” If your subscription is billed by Roku, you must watch through The Roku Channel — the standalone app will reject your login. If The Roku Channel itself is misbehaving, see our Roku Channel troubleshooting guide.
Fire TV / Fire TV Stick
- Go to Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → Acorn TV.
- Select Clear cache, then Clear data.
- Restart the Fire TV, open Acorn TV, and sign in again. If that fails, uninstall and reinstall the app.
Apple TV, iPhone & iPad
- Confirm your hardware qualifies: Acorn TV supports Apple TV 4th generation or later and iOS 15 or later on iPhone and iPad. Older hardware simply cannot run the current app.
- Delete the app, restart the device, and reinstall from the App Store.
- If you subscribed through Apple, check that the subscription is still active in Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
Samsung, Vizio & Android TV
- Acorn TV supports Samsung Tizen TVs from 2017 onward, Vizio SmartCast, and Android TV/Google TV. On older sets, the app may be missing from the store or stuck on an unsupported version — a cheap streaming stick is the practical fix.
- On supported sets: uninstall the app, power-cycle the TV (unplug it for a minute), reinstall, and sign in.
Computer
Acorn recommends Google Chrome for web playback at acorn.tv. If video will not play, update Chrome, disable ad-blocker extensions for the site, and clear the browser cache.
Sign-In Problems
Repeated “incorrect email or password” errors usually mean one of three things: a typo from the TV keyboard (slow down — it happens to everyone), a password that needs resetting at acorn.tv, or credentials from the wrong billing source, per the Roku trap above. Note that Acorn TV has no activation codes at all — you sign in with email and password on every device. Our Acorn TV activation guide explains the sign-in process for each device, and why any site offering an “Acorn activation code” is fake.
“Not Available In Your Region”
Acorn TV's apps and catalog are region-specific — the US/Canada service does not work from unsupported countries, and a VPN can trigger this message even at home. Turn off any VPN, confirm your device's location settings, and try again. If you are traveling abroad, this message is expected behavior rather than a bug.
Still Broken?
If none of this works, the outage may be on Acorn's side — smaller streamers have rough nights too, and sibling services hit the same walls (our Tubi troubleshooting guide covers a nearly identical checklist). Contact Acorn's support team through support.acorn.tv with your device model and what you have already tried; they can see account-side problems that no amount of reinstalling will fix.
