Proof of onward travel is a rule when you travel into a country outside of your home country. It means that you must show documentation that you plan to leave the country you visit within a time frame.

Have you ever checked in at an airport and get asked for proof of onward travel? Don’t get mad at the check-in agent! It’s a rule for most if not all countries. Although it’s not implemented in some countries others always enforce it.

Why do I need proof of onward travel?

  • It shows that you have enough money to leave the country.
  • It “means” that you intend to leave the country before your visa expires.
  • Or, that you don’t intend to stay in the country.

Proof of onward travel also reduce the risk of denial of service from airlines. Or worse, denial of entry to the country you’re visiting. Ouch!

What is an onward flight?

An onward flight or ticket is proof of a booked train, bus or airline ticket from one country about to another.

An onward ticket can be a round-trip airline ticket. But it can also be an airline or train or bus ticket from one country to another.
